April 25 (Bloomberg) -- Two people died in a plane crash south of Madrid at a property belonging to Emilio Botin, chairman of Spanish lender Banco Santander SA, a government official said. Neither was a member of the banking family.

The light aircraft, which was attempting to land at an airstrip on the Botin property known as El Castano, was transporting illegal drugs, according to the official, who works for the local arm of Spain's national government. She declined to be named.

Calls to the civil guard police and emergency services seeking comment were referred to her office, which represents the central government in Ciudad Real, the province where the property is located, about 250 kilometers (155 miles) from Madrid.

One man was waiting in a car for the plane, and he has been arrested, the official said. None of the three has any relation to the Botin family, which is believed to have nothing to do with the events, she said.

The aircraft was carrying more than 200 kilograms (441 pounds) of hashish when it crashed coming to rest in a neighboring property, Efe newswire reported, citing Maximo Diaz-Cano, a government representative in the region.
